Convert SWF to FLV (Flash Video)

Problem

I had a video in .swf (Flash) format from some news agency.  I needed to convert the .swf file to .flv (Flash Video), so I could embed it on a webpage using a Flash Video player.

I'm on Windows XP.

SUPER was the best media converter for converting from SWF to FLV.

After a day of trial and error, the easiest tool I found for converting SWF to FLV was SUPER (that's the name). Here's the direct link to the SUPER download page.

It's the only one that worked, seems pretty stable, and even had the easiest interface to use.  Plus it's completely free.

My step-by-step process

I had the SWF file in hand.  (Try looking in the source of the video page to see if the actual video filename is there. If it's not, then you probably can't get to it.)

Here's what I did using SUPER to take my SWF and output a new FLV:

  1. Select the Output Container.  In this case, I wanted an FLV, so I selected "swf or flv (Flash)".
  2. Select the Output Field Codec.  It should say "Flash Video".
  3. Select the Output Audio Codec.  I left it on "mp3".
  4. In the VIDEO box, I was happy with the original resolution, so I changed the Video Scale Size to "NoChange".
  5. In the AUDIO box, I was happy with the original audio, so I checked the "Stream Copy" box.
  6. In the OUTPUT box, right-click to open up a menu.  Select "Output File Saving Mangement" to change the location of the output folder.  (The default output folder is C:\Program Files\eRightSoft\SUPER\OutPut)
  7. Drag the SWF file into SUPER.
  8. Checked the box next to the video to reencode, then hit "Encode (Active Files)".

That created an FLV file that I was able to embed on a webpage using JW's FLV Media Player.

I tried these media converters, and they didn't work for various reasons.

1. http://media-convert.com/

Error about slow connection (??).  It's worth a shot for one-off needs because it's completely web based (no downloads or installs).

2. Media Coder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/)

Kept throwing an "011: no file outputed" error.

When it did encode a new file without throwing the error, there would be no video, just audio.

If you do try this, here's a tip. Use extensions > other devices > flash video maker.

3. sothink swf converter (http://www.sothink.com/)

Kept locking up in the middle of transcoding.
